Cystic acne is the most severe form of acne vulgaris. It develops into small cysts that can be quite painful. It is caused by excessive build up of sebum in the pores. This form of acne can affect the face, the chest, the back, shoulders and sometimes the upper arms. Cysts are normally filled with a white pus-like liquid. If this condition is not treated early, it may lead to scarring. Intensive treatment can therefore help minimize the extent of scarring.
Although this form of acne can affect anybody, teenage boys and young men are at a higher risk of developing the condition. It is believed that cystic acne can be as a result of heredity. If you have a close family member who has or has had this condition, you are also likely to suffer from the same.
Like other forms of acne, this form is also caused by overactive oil glands, excess dead skin cells within the hair follicle as well as other bacteria that are responsible for the disease. This condition normally destroys healthy skin tissue increasing the chances of developing scars. You are advised not to try to pop the cysts because you can greatly damage the skin and even worsen the condition. Doing so could also lead to serious scarring.
Treatment for cystic acne can be through oral antibiotics, accutane and for women, oral contraceptives may be effective. Other treatment methods for this condition include surgical excision and drainage as well as intralesional corticosteroid injections.
